Every Armillary is unique and tailored to its owner. Each piece is crafted for the exact latitude and longitude of its intended location, ensuring exceptional accuracy — whether installed in a city courtyard in London, a Mediterranean garden in Europe, or a contemporary landscape in Australia.
You may also choose to personalise your Armillary with bespoke engraving.
David Harber’s fascination with the history of science, space and the solar system inspired the creation of the Armillary Sphere — a piece of astronomical artistry. Originally invented by the ancient Greeks, the armillary was used to observe the great circles of the heavens, calculate the sun’s movements, and predict celestial events.
Dimensions
The Armillary Sphere is available in diameters of 70cm, 80cm or 90cm, with larger sizes available upon request.
Finishes and Colours
Each Armillary can be crafted in one of several exquisite finishes:
-
Bronze — either antique tan or with a Verdigris patina, offering a sense of timelessness and classic endurance.
-
Mirror-Polished Stainless Steel — made from marine-grade stainless steel for brilliance, strength, and longevity.
-
Brass — a lighter material with an elegant weight and a patina that deepens beautifully with age.
Bronze
Strong, durable and rich with history, the bronze Armillary evokes a sense of permanence. Its Verdigris patina lends an aged authenticity that sits beautifully in both traditional and modern settings.
Optional embellishments may include additional rings marking the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Polar Circles, a calendar band showing the progression of the months, and an arrowhead and tail.
Stainless Steel
Crafted from marine-grade stainless steel, this version combines sleek precision with lasting brilliance. Its highly reflective surface captures surrounding light and movement, creating a dynamic interplay between sculpture and setting. Additional features such as a calendar, arrowhead and tail, or extra rings can be incorporated to enhance functionality.
Brass
Lighter than bronze but equally striking, brass develops a rich patina over time, deepening in tone and character. This version feels at home in both classic English gardens and contemporary outdoor spaces. Optional features such as a calendar, arrowhead and tail, or tropic and polar rings can be added to complement the design.
Personalisation
Each Armillary can be engraved with words or details of personal significance — from family names and mottos to memorable dates, quotations or commissioning inscriptions. The result is a deeply personal timepiece that celebrates both celestial movement and human connection.
As well as marking the equinoxes, the Armillary’s equatorial band can be complemented by rings representing the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Polar Circles, and a calendar band to highlight significant moments in the year.
