Whilst most sundials invite only passive observation, this 16th-century design encourages closer interaction with its time-telling mechanics. Equal in accuracy to the armillary sphere, the globe dial reads the shadows cast by both the sun and the moon.
The globe’s graceful crescent-shaped gnomon, with its hidden internal counterweight, is adjusted until the shadow falls directly beneath it, allowing the time to be read against the hours engraved or etched into the surface. The romance of telling the time in a moonlit garden evokes an atmosphere of privacy and serenity. When used as a moon dial, it tells the time on the night of the full moon and for three or four nights before and after, as the moon waxes and wanes.
An optional addition to the globe dial is a cast of the Greek Titan Atlas supporting it. This striking element serves as a poignant reminder of the immense weight of responsibility borne by Atlas to uphold and sustain the Earth.
